No 'Fancy Riding': in Milwaukee

Check out this story Staisha sent over to me. Thanks!!!

Two-abreast: The provision allowing cyclists to ride two abreast includes the caveat, “if the flow of traffic is not impaired.” That language would require a discretionary call on the part of a police officer issuing a ticket, and the potential for an argument in court.

At stake would be a fine of $10 to $20.

Brakes and fixies: The ordinance requires that bikes be equipped “with a brake in good working condition, adequate to control the movement of and to stop the bicycle whenever necessary.”

It does not specify that a fixed-gear bike must be outfitted with a hand brake, nor does it confirm that the braking action of the rider pushing backward on the pedals to slow the bike would be sufficient.

Ald. Nik Kovac said he interprets the ordinance to say “your brakes are your legs.” Dave Schlabowske, the city’s pedestrian and bicycle coordinator, said he reads it to say that a separate hand brake is required.

Different courts across the country have provided different rulings on the topic.

2. Were do you live?
Boston

3. What are you riding these days?
Trek with Record Carbon, Zero Gravity brakes, and Mavic Cosmic Carbon Wheels.

4. Tell us how you got into filming bicycles?
Doing alleycats and seeing the speeds and skills off the charts. I wanted to show the public the point of view of the rider and mastered it over many years practice.

5. What is the craziest project that you have ever filmed and been a part of?
New York city alleycats in general, underwater riding, and riding the Great Wall

6. Tell us how your past trip to Miami for the Bicycle Film Fest went?
Miami BFF went very well. Loose Cannon was amazing to film. Then the alleycat came out great with riding on I95, going through drawbridges, traffic, and much more.

7. Favorite city to ride in?

NYC

8. In the last few years, what is one thing you have noticed changing throughout the world of cycling?
Many more other types of riders involved in messenger events. Fashion has taken off too.

9. What can we expect to see in the future?
Many more people riding and realizing how amazing the bike is for getting anywhere instantly.

10. Please tell us about your awesome helmet cam. Is this something you built or purchased. And how heavy is that thing?
The helmet cam is something that took years of development with my friend Craig and it has two Sony HD cameras on it and weights 8 pounds.

11. Is there anything else you would like to add. Like when that footage from Miami BFF will be released?
Miami footage will be released as a short version in a month on the web and then the full version will be in next year’s Miami BFF.

Q and A with Michael of 66Fixed

1. Name, Age, Occupation?
Michael, 39, Bike Shop Owner.

2. Were is 66Fixed located?
Downtown St Petersburg, FL.

3. Tell everyone how and when 66Fixed was started.
While making t-shirts for The Bike Room in St Pete, I got into bikes again cause David(the owner) would hook me up with cheap prices and cool parts. Got into fixed with a 2003 KHS Flite 100. Came with Sugino 75s at the time. Think I paid $425, can you believe that?

Usual sad story followed: riding fixed sparked an addiction to bikes, I wanted to get higher. Aren't I clever? Riding fixed may be a gateway drug. They should outlaw it, Gosh Darn It!

Looking back, I really didn't have a plan. I was thinking "Here... look at this. This is badass."
66 opened May 2007, but we celebrate June 6th obviously.

4. What are you riding these days?
A Dolan Champion with an FSA Carbon Track Pro crankset and Campy track hubs.
An ABLOCCO red commuter with trackends and linear pulls.
An ALAN cyclocross disguised as a Guerrciotti with a White Industries Eccentric ENO on the back.

5. I see that you are really big into the cyclocross. Tell us how that's going?
Laid back as hell with lots of chances to suffer and beer handoffs to ease the pain.
Road racing can be a bit intimidating, but cross is all about getting dirty and having a good time.

6. What is your opinion on the St. Petersburg cycling scene?
Wild! St Pete has a real "clean it up with a dirty feel" feel. I likes its.

7. Favorite city to ride in?

St Pete. Long stretches inside the city. You can really get some clean distance and speed in.
A new town is always good too. Taking a fixed up to San Antonio, Fl to ride the hills is quite an experience.

8. Over the last few years there has been some really awesome changes to the fixed gear/singlespeed scene. Out of everything that is going on, what is your favorite?

Depends on the mood I'm in. Right now... the huge amount of products coming onto the market made by smaller companies.

9. Beverage of choice on a Friday night?

Barleywine. Though Sake Bombs have worked their way in lately.
Last night I drank a bunch of Elephant. I like them fancy malt liquors.

10. What can we expect to see in the future at 66Fixed?
Time travel. And some possible expansion. Like to have a bigger place. Like to put on some events. Like to start some manufacturing. I've got a lot of ideas.

11. Would you like to add anything else. Like maybe the date St. Petersburg would like to square up against Fort Lauderdale at the Brain Piccolo Velodrome?
I'd like to add how special I think Florida is, that's why I live here. A date? April 10th and 11th. Let's make it happen!!!

And I'd like to end with a shout out to my man Corey MF Jordan!!!

Q and A with Peyton from the Bicycle Spot

1. Name, Age, Occupation.

Peyton Walters, 39, bike wrench

2. Were is your shop located?

5074 N. Dixie Highway Oakland Park, FL. 33334

3. Tell us about your shop. When did the doors open?
Formally it was Barry Bicycle. Then in 2002 Bicycle Spot opened.

4. What are you riding these days?
My 1980's Bridgestone T-100 for the last 6 months.

5. Your shop caters a lot to the fixed/gear singlespeed crowd. Tell us how you feel about this?
It's great to see the people that have been off bikes have gotten into the fixed gear riding.

6. In the last couple of years. This whole fixed gear/singlespeed thing as gotten huge. What is the one thing about this you cant stand seeing?

A free wheel hub with a BV lockring, it does not work.

7. Were does Payton ride? Tell us what or were your favorite place to ride are?

A1A for commuting to work and the Executive Airport with my kid and nephew.

8. Can you explain the odd bunch that is always at your shop? And the one guy that looks like Hulk Hogan?

Its a bike shop everyone is welcome including weirdos. That's Kenny AKA Crazy Kenny. He's cool biker dude and Bicycle Spot tire tester. (he rides 8,000 miles a year) his present tires have 2800 miles and he figures 800 more in the rear before replacing it. Not bad for a $14.00 tire.

9. What can we expect to see in the future at the Bicycle Spot?

More fixed gear bikes and parts and related products.

10. You seem to get a variety of bikes through the doors. What are your favorite kind of bicycles to work. Which ones give you the most enjoyment?

Rode bikes gave me the most satisfaction, but now making a huffy work is just as good.

11. When can we expect to see Payton at the next Gold Sprints ready to race?

As soon as i finish my side project I'm working on?

BikeClub Games - Tall Bike Joust

BikeClub Games "TALL BIKE JOUST” (TBJ) introduces iPhone gamers to a new experience in extreme sports within the underground subculture of mutant bicycle clubs. In TBJ, gamers are in the rider’s seat as they compete in jousting tournaments on tricked-out freak bikes within a complex 3D fighting platform. BikeClub Games’ TBJ goes beyond simple mobile device games as Players use strategy along with skill to participate in this uniquely fierce world of tall bike jousting. TBJ enables gamers to craft a character’s competitive capabilities and exposes them to extreme terrains and conditions that will make each joust more challenging and enticingly difficult. TBJ delivers the ultimate in 3D action gaming with the distinct thrill of first person, one to one combat jousting with spectacular body blows and dismantling wipeouts. Players compete in QUICK JOUSTS and longer TOURNAMENT battles to increase their ability to defeat opponents in their quest to be the World Champion.

As Players face off against BikeClub opponents, they quickly realize the complexities of the game are far beyond hand – eye coordination. To be the best, a challenger must customize a TBJ character whose survival requires BikeClub essentials to aid in victory. Game play strategy comes in the form of managing your character’s HEART meter and attribute points such as POWER, SPEED and GUARD. Winning a QUICK JOUST or a TOURNAMENT round grants access to customized gear like lance attachments, body armor, padding and bike parts that fortify both the Player and his or her bike. Each winning match increases the Player’s ranking and attribute points, enabling character development and equipment upgrades.

TBJ features six different post-apocalyptic cityscape's with customized challenges and obstacles. A New York City terrain of glass and potholes; Minneapolis with snow and ice; Reno with punishing sand and sun; New Orleans delivers flooded wetlands; a Hong Kong cityscape of blinding neon; and Amsterdam the bicycle capital of the world. Each tournament has 3 rounds and true to all tall bike jousting challenges, Players can choose their opponents. Beat the tournament defender to become the Regional Champion and unlock other tournaments. The supreme confrontation is to joust Doyle – the Official Tall Bike Jousting Champion of the World, to secure the top spot and achieve eternal fame.

This is your chance to win the "TALL BIKE JOUST" app and an 8GB iPod touch!

Q and A with Mikey from Radioactive Records

1. Name, Age, Occupation?
Mikey Ramirez, 29, record store shot caller.

2. Were do you live?
Fort Lauderdale, Florida

3. What are you riding these days?
Schwinn Cutter. All components are stock. I'm a very casual rider (i.e.-work, around town, health reasons) so the cutter suits me just fine.

4. Tell us about Radioactive Records.
South Florida's largest independent record store and concert venue.

5. What is the connection with an independent record store, and bicycles?
They are both misunderstood lifestyles/hobbies/etc. They share a common link with culture that is considered outside of the box.

6. Radioactive Records, hosted the after party for Call To Cranks. Tell us how that went?
I wasn't there but from the reports it sounded like a great event. Only problem is some of you bicyclists need to bathe more frequently.

7. What is the one thing that Mikey cant stand? And what would you do to change it?
One thing? That's not fair. As far as what's bothering me right now? Bad attitudes. I can't stand bad attitudes and rudeness. How would I change it? All depends on the person. Most people need a discussion or a punch in the face.

8. Favorite beer?
Imported.

9. Who does it better? Depeche Mode or Joy Division? Quicksand or Rival Schools? Hmm. Tough one. Joy Division & Depeche Mode are very important bands to me and very different at the same time. I can definitely vote for Quicksand over Rival Schools though.

10. What can we expect to see new at Radioactive Records in the future?
More records, more concerts, a coffee bar & whatever else we can think of!

A change of pace with this weeks Q and A. Mikey and Radioactive Records hold down the South Florida independent music scene. If your looking for hard to find vinyl, or any underground DIY music check them out. If they don't have it, they will get it. They also have shows FREE shows every week with local South Florida and touring bands.
