South Florida cycling groups band together to end confrontations with motorists

With all the drama that has been surfacing in the last few months, between cyclist and motorist the South Florida Bicycle Coalition, ZMotion, and The Florida Department of Transportation are campaigning the "Ride Right, Drive Right" program. Created by Pat Patregnani, founder of the ZMotion cycling team. Their goal is to bring awareness and to enforce the laws that are set for cyclist and motorist, such as the 3ft law. Q and A with Corey Jordan

1. Name, Age, Occupation?
Corey L Jordan, 30 years old, I'm a wrench at Northeast Cycles.

2. Were do you live?
St Petersburg, Florida

3. What are you riding these days?
A custom Spicer Cycles.

4. Favorite city to ride in? Why?
Downtown LA, because you can get hurt in traffic if you don't no what fuck your doing!

5. Over the last 5 years, the whole fixed gear/singlespeed scene has blown up. What is your opinion on this mass movement?
Well, I know you know you hear this one a lot ( I'm down for any thing that gets people out on bikes) But the truth is I think Florida's cycling community is either one way or the other, there's not a lot of diversity. The Fixed gear is the latest. I think a lot of kids are thinking at first that the bike is an enhancement to their swagger. May it not be for a more righteous reason other than the bike looks cool and all their friends ride them. I like to think of it this way. People that might have got into riding track bikes for the wrong reason nine times out of ten either give up or really fall in love with cycling and that's one of the most positive things about the revival of the fixed wheel. Not to mention what it has done for the industry as well . So hopefully as we muter as a community our love for many different types of bikes will as well.

6. Tells us about Black Mass. Will there be a Black Mass 4?
The Black Mass started out as a Halloween ride slash race that was a group ride to the start of the drag race and it was locals only . The second one was the start of the costume contest Mr.Davis of 66Fixed won that race. The third had an unexpected turnout. We planed for seventy five, we got a hundred .We had to print more manifests up at the last minute and we didn't have enough spoke cards. So that's when I decided to make people race for their card and you only got one if you had a completed manifest and came in at reasonable place. So sorry to all those bitch ass kids that didn't get no spoke card or free pizza go suck it! And yes their will be a four so all you haters either stay quiet or stay home!

7. Beverage of choice?
Arizona Ice Tea. duh!

8. Music of choice?
Weedeater.

9. What bothers you the most about all the separation between the polo kids, the tricksters, and the riders?

Well its like Islam,Christianity and Judaism. I don't believe in organised religion

10. What can we expect to see from Corey in the future?
More of me being awesome!

11. Is there anything else that you would like to add?
Yeah, fuck Zack Fortune!

Cranksgiving Recap

Cranksgiving Miami 2009 from rydel high on Vimeo.

Mad Props to Rydel and others who help put on this past weekends Cranksgiving. There were just around 100 registered riders, who came out for this good cause. With all the collected food being donated to Camillus House in Miami. The race was fun as hell. With checkpoints throughout Downtown Miami and one stop on Miami Beach. Which Pikey and I decided to take 195 instead of the easy way!!

It really hit my heart, as to what I was a part of, when someone came up to me at the donation and said "Thank you so much for all this food, THANK YOU!" And that right there made it worth every minute.

Checkout some pics and videos over at the Cranksgiving Blog, or at Miami Bike Scene. And a full run down of the days winners!

Q and A with Todd Siegle

1. Name, Age, Occupation?
Todd Siegle. 31. Corporate Zombie

2. Were do you live?
Largo/Clearwater, FL

3. What are you riding?
2002 Vivalo Pro Special Track Frame, Hatta Swan Super Deluxe Headset, Sugino 75 BB, Sugino 75 165mm Cranks, Sugino 75 47t Chainring, Surly 18t Cog, MKS Sylvan Pedal, MKS Toe Clips,
MKS Nylon Toe Straps, Kashimax Super Aero Saddle, Nitto NJ-SP72 Seatpost, Nitto Jaguar 100mm Stem, Nitto B123 39cm Drop Bars, Champ Grips, Suzue Pro Max Track Hubs, Sun CR18 36h Rims, Soma Everwear Tires.

4.Please explain Horroh. What is it? When did start? Reasons?
HorroH came about after splitting ways with another clothing company I was doing with a friend. I wanted to get the ideas I had in my head on to tees. HorroH (pronounced "Whore-O"...lol, that's the easiest way to say it) is a palindrome. HorroH started out being limited release shirts and has sort of moved away from that to now focus on sponsoring riders and promoting events. I'm still planning on making tees, just not as often.

5. You are the organizer of Fixed Fight. Over the last 3 years it has grown in attendance. Tell everyone what to expect in Fixed Fight 4?
This race is a big passion of mine. The first year the race was put on was the first time an alleycat was held in St. Petersburg, FL. We didn't know what to expect. The whole fixed gear craze was just hitting the area in full swing. Well, we had 100 registered racers that year. Fixed Fight 2 saw around 150. This year Fixed Fight 3 had just under 200 racers! I have to thank my good friend Pete Young (HorroH team rider) for his help this year. So next year Fixed Fight 4 will be bigger & better for sure. I've already started lining up some BIG surprises. Sorry, no spoilers.

6. What are your opinions regarding the growth in fixed gear/singlespeed over the last 5 years? I'm right there in that growth. I'm no veteran of this stuff so I'd be crazy to say I don't feel like I'm a part of the growth. Whatever gets people on bikes is cool with me.

7. Favorite place to ride? Why?
Honestly I think the best place to ride is where you're riding. Make your own city the best place to ride and don't let a bad city control if you have a good time.

8. Beverage of choice?
Good ol water. I'm a simple dude.

9. Regarding cycling. What is the one thing that Todd hates?
I don't "hate" anything, but I do dislike when fellow cyclists hassle new cyclists. Everyone deserves a chance to learn and ride.

10. What can we expect to see from Horroh and Todd in the future?
Expect well organized events from HorroH. You might even see a HorroH branded chewing gum... Why not! As for me, I'll be around.

11. What are the companies out there that you are really into regarding cycling, fixed gear?
I have to start with Mash. Mike Martin really supported me when we did the first Fixed Fight and I'll never forget that. I have to give some love to 66Fixed in St. Petersburg too. Michael over there keeps a lot of FL rolling. Other than that I like whatever is hyphy! Ha.

12. Anything else that you would like to add? Maybe tell us when we are going to see Todd pulling wheelies and keo spins?
Todd doesn't do wheelies. Todd doesn't do tricks. Todd doesn't normally talk in the third person. Seriously though, I have a lot of respect for the kids doing tricks. I like to cruise though. Every now and then I'll mash it. Everyone has their thing and I like to think mine is flow.

Q and A with Pikey Mikey

1. Name, age, occupation?
Mikey Pechonis, 25, I work a typical 8-5, 5-day a week job, and run Pikey Bags!

2. Were do you live?

Currently in Boca Raton, Florida

3. What are you riding?
For my trick/riding, I’m riding a purple 61cm Leader 725TR, with white B43's, and Halo tires, and BMX bars, for my current ratio I am loving 46x18, for my seat a San Marco Rolls tops it off nicely.

For my polo bike I'm riding a heavily modified 62cm Raleigh Reliant. Cut the rear stays and added track dropouts. With some DP18's and Gatorskins. Ratio is 39x19.

4. Tell us about Pikey Bags. What are the goals for the future?
Well Pikey Bags is a South Florida based bag company. Pikey Bags was started when I was looking for a bag to use and couldn't find an affordable one with the options I wanted. I’ve been sewing for years and knew I could make a high quality, reasonably priced bag for riders. All Pikey Bags come with breathable padded mesh backing and strap(s), 2 pockets, plus an additional laptop pocket. All Pikey bags are customizable to the customer’s request.

Right now Pikey Bags is working on collaborating with a few local companies, which should be out in the next month. For the future I have a few tricks up my sleeve, but I can’t reveal them quite yet. However, when I do them, you'll hear about it!

5. What is your favorite city to ride in? Why?
I really enjoy riding Miami. I love riding in traffic it definitely keeps things exciting. One day I would really like to ride Japan.

6. How do you feel about the South Florida Cycling Scene? Anything you want to get off your chest?
Well, where do I start? I enjoy doing every thing this scene has to offer: playing polo, doing tricks and racing. You don’t have to just do ONE you can do all THREE.

I wish they maintained the bike lanes in the hood so I can stop picking up Ben the Baptist every other morning on my way to work.

7. With the growth in fixed gear/single speed over the last few years. What is your opinion and outlook on the masses of kids riding these kinds of bikes?
I see the fixed gear community growing into a household sport where it will only get bigger and better.

8. There are more and more events happening in the local scene. What is you favorite event to be part of?
Like I said I really enjoy doing all the events. If I had to pick I would say polo… win or loose, there’s a unique adrenaline rush when you’re on the court, ready to get wrecked at any second.

9. What is you beverage of choice?

Non-alcoholic- I'm a XXX-Vitamin Water junkie. Trying to stay away from soda… trying!
For alcohol- I’m all about the Patron. If you’re going to drink it might as well be good!!!

10. When can we expect to see the Pikey website up and running and the awesome bags your making for sale?
Pikey site is up as of 11-1-09. Pikeybags.com Ben the Baptist and I have a photo shoot planned in the upcoming weeks for the site.

11. Is there anything that you would like to add?

Go ride!

Q and A with Ben the Baptist

1. Name, Age, Occupation?
Ben Baptiste, I'm 26 years old, I'm a service writer assistant at a car dealer ship in Ft Lauderdale.

2. Were do you live?
I live in Pompano Beach, Florida

3. What are you riding these days?
Eighth Inch Scrambler frame with a steer tube extension for bar spins with a 700 front rim (i like the frame for the price and build its pretty dope) San Marco Rolle saddle, bent gold Nitto risers (Justin ;D) just picked up some some 160 cranks from The Bike Spot not sure if I like'em yet, o yeah and 46x15.

4. I see you playing polo, tricking, doing races and just straight up riding. What tickles your fancy the most?
I like them all man. I think riding is more then just being hooked on one aspect of the community. That's bigger then just tricks or polo ya know.

5. Tell us your opinion of the South Florida fixed gear scene? What do you hate seeing? And what do you love seeing?
AWWW, the South Florida scene. Its kinda funny down hear. HATE is such an UGLY word. What I dislike is people being closed minded about or community. I also dislike the fact that I myself have slowed down my appearance on the scene do to the lack of unity. What I do like is seeing is big turn outs at bike rides, polo, trick night and kids I've never seen before riding fixies. It lets me know the community is growing.

6. I have been up to Orlando with you. And I was amazed at your celebrity status. Please tell us. How do you do it?
LOL I'm not a celebrity man. I believe in treating people the way you want to be treated and I just like to have a good time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

7. Beer of choice?

I'm a cheep date baby Old E, PBR it doesn't matter.

8. In a perfect world. What is the one thing you would like to see happen to the cycling community here in South Florida?
Just a little bit of unity no drama.

9. When can we expect to see Ben the Baptist, rolling deep with all the Orlando cats in Fort Lauderdale?
LOL! I don't know I think every ones coming down for the all Florida event.

10. Your a contributor of 954 fixed gear. Being a fellow writer, blogger, whatever. Do you find it hard to stay up on the site and keep adding information daily? Blogging is a bitch. Its hard to stay up on the times when work takes up half your day, by the time I get home I just wanna eat, drink a beer and pass out. I'm slowly motivating myself to get back on the blog hog.

11. What is on Ben's plate for the future?
A new Bern helmet.

12. Would you like to add anything else? Like when your going to master the foot plants barefoot?
Not sure I wanna master that trick barefoot.

Awareness Test

Fraidy Cat 2 Recap

Me and Zeegerman were the lone Fort Lauderdale riders to head up to the West Palm Beach Fraidy Cat 2 Alley Cat on Halloween. There were 27 registered riders, with 20 completing the race. 15 checkpoints. Were you had to find a sticker and draw the picture. I tied for first place with Chris Bell. And Zeegerman got second!! The after party was a blast at some bar with a angry bartender, who didn't want to serve us water? All and all, we had a great time riding in WPB. There was something called a Moonfest, going on and a bunch of angry drivers who don't like bicycles. Also, we were told by the cops to get the hell out of the neighborhood we were in before we got shot or robbed. Checkout the Freak Bike Nation for the final standings list and a bunch of thank yous to Naomi and Lorelai for taking over while TIII is in the hospital nursing an infected leg.
