F.U.B.A.R. Toe Clips

After last weeks MKS failure. I went and searched for something different. I found these. F.U.B.A.R. two gate steel toe clips. Ebay has them for $15 bucks. They look super durable. The steel is that same steel Soma uses. Real heavy duty. I did try some of the Some clips out for the last week. They were pink, giving to me from a friend. They worked. But just didn't feel right. I will write a full review on the new F.U.B.A.R ones next week after riding them for a few days.

Q and A with YOSHI

1. Name, Age, Occupation
Jessica aka Yoshi. 26. Project Manager for an interactive design web firm as well as blogger for many sites and buyer for Fatlace.

2..Were do you live?
Bushwick, Brooklyn is my haven, but downtown NY is my stomping ground lol.

3. What are you riding these days
Nemesis-Project custom frame, 50cm, Colnago fork, uhm... the rest I don't remember because the bf put it together for me hahahahahahaha!

4. What is your favorite city to ride in. Why?
NY because its super flat and it gets your heart racing when riding through traffic!

5. Your really big into fashion. As far as cycling goes. What would you
like to see more of for the ladies?
I would love to see more everything for the ladies - tops, shirts, tanks, dresses, shorts, bottoms in general... it would be awesome to find a brand that's not too sporty looking for us to wear while riding. I end up wearing a bunch of American Apparel because its simple, light, and easy to wear for riding.

6. I see your into Nike. What about Asics?
I LOVE Asics... Onitsuka's are my FAV! they're soooo comfy!

7. What are the motorist like were you live?
CRAZY ASSHOLES.

8. Do you find it hard to look cute and ladylike while riding your bike?
YES, all the time. However, I've come up with clever ways to wear dresses and cute stuff at times. like managing to pull up the skirt of my dress and tuck it into my bag strap when riding (shorts under) and then untuck it when i get to work... stuff like that, but shoes wise, can't be too safe wearing platforms or heels... still need to find a nice pair of ladylike shoes to wear...

9. I have seen pictures of gals wearing fuzzy boots, funny heels, and really ridiculous shoes while riding. WHY? Would someone do that?
LMAO. I've seen that too, i don't know how comfy they are when trying to go up the bridge like that. I'd be so worried I'd get caught in the chains or I won't be able to skid - that attire is more for cruiser beach bikes in my opinion.

10. What is Twicon?
HAHAHAHAHAHAHHAA Twicon is a Twilight Convention that will be held in Dallas end of the month. I've been in the running to become a correspondent for the ReelzChannel to cover the convention and I'm currently tied for first place! We'll find out the winner soon hehehee.

11. When you gonna come down to South Florida?
I hope soon because I need a serious vacation

12. When can we expect to see you wearing a Revisable Headset Cycling Hat?
When I can find myself a hat duh! I'm always borrowing Johnny Igei (bf) DQM snap backs for our long rides, but I need a more form fitting femme one... ahem... just sayin... ahem. LMAO

Everyone go and check out Yoshi's blogs!!

FTL Monthly Recap

July's monthly ride was a good turnout. A bunch of Miami kids showed up. I shortened the ride due to late departure and chance of the typical afternoon/evening shower that haunted us from the beginning. Thank you to James over at McGuire's for the food spread. Here's pics.

What the Hell?

Mikey from Pikey Bags sent this over to me. What ingenuity, right? My father is a hunter, and I know that if he had to get dinner home he would do the same thing.

Broken Clip

Has anyone ever had this happen? I have had these MKS Toe Clips for a good 3 months. I really liked them and never had any problems. I have this thing, were I will go through and try everything twice before I settle on something. Is that OCD? So, I settled on these and this is what happened!! They broke!! At least they didn't break when I was riding down a bridge. One thing I have learned, always look your stuff over before riding.

Q and A with Jennyk

1. Name, Age, Occupation.
Jenn Kyle Whalen, immature at Twenty-four, video journalist for VJIAM TV, Producer for Bicycle Film Festival Miami and Orlando

2. Were do you live?
Currently bouncing around the United States, but based in FL.

3. What are you riding these days?
53 cm KHS Flite100, 48X16 gear ratio accessorized with a San Marco Limited Edition Bicycle Film Festival NYC Concor saddle customized with a natural female paint job, and some sweet BMX bar pads I won it in the Philadelphia Bulimatron Booze Cruise. That's all the bike jock shop talk you're getting out of me.

4. Explain how you got involved with the Bicycle Film Fest.
I first volunteered for the Bicycle Film Festival in NYC three years ago, which is how I met founding director Brendt Barbur. I have been helping ever since and jumped at the opportunity to produce the Bicycle Film Festival in Orlando (Aug 21-22) and Miami (Dec 9-12). It is the first time BFF has ever come to Florida, so I'm super excited. The festival is a really special time for cyclists to get down and celebrate everything they love about bikes, and FL knows how to get down. It has always been my favorite time of the year. The perfect mix of chaos and culture.

5. So, seeing how your all over the place with the Film Fest. How do you see other cities getting involved with their own bicycle community?
After riding in NYC, Philly, and San Francisco within a couple months time, I can just say one thing. Cycling is so cool now.

6. What was Australia like. Did you get to ride around the city at all?
Australia is a beautiful place. Very politically correct. Sort of made me feel like a delinquent there. Not new news! A good friend of mine loaned me his fixed gear while I was in Melbourne, which made my trip amazing. It's so nice riding there because cyclists rule the roads. And you don't feel dorky wearing a helmet there because you have to. It's the law.

7. What is your favorite thing about the South Florida Scene?
It's really fresh and new so everyone still gets very excited about things, where as people are more jaded in other cities where the bike scene is older and more established. Stay happy Florida. Hot Latin dudes on bikes are unmistakable. Appreciate.

8. In the next few years. Were do you see the South Florida Cycling Scene going?
The only way is up.

9. I heard that your bike got stolen, from some dirt bag bar in Fort Lauderdale. I know the bar you were at. Why the hell would a gal like you be caught dead in that scummy bar.
Hey I keep it grimy. But that was the worst feeling I have ever had. I walked out of that bar and looked down upon a half of a cut U-lock. That bike meant a lot to me, friends helped me put it together and a lot of the parts were given to me. It was built through love. Thieves don't believe in love.

10. You won a Headset Cycling Hat a while back at Loose Canons. Tell us why it is the best cycling hat EVER!
Because it looks like a bedazzler threw up on it. And I was really happy with how well I did in that Loose Cannons race, so the hat represents that. And how much all I really want to do is smoke Ferny.

11. If you had to choose between guys or bikes what would you choose. Why?
If it fits, I ride.

12. Would you like to add anything else?
I really love all of you. I miss you guys a lot. Hi Rydel! Ya Ya Ya enough sappy stuff.
Get hyped about the Bicycle Film Festival! It's going to be a shredder. Don't wait around for it to come to Miami in December. Come to both! Orlando is happening Aug 21-22nd with parties, art, races, and great films. If you want to help out email me jen@bicyclefilmfestival.com and also visit the website http://www.bicyclefilmfestival.com/

Stay True, Ride Bikes, Adrenaline is one hell of a drug.

Counting to Infinity Trailer

So my really good friend, long time roomie, and all around great dude Derek Morse. Has written an amazing movie. Based on growing up in Connecticut and doing what you have to do to get by. This story is way to familiar. There are some really cool shots of the landscape that makes up our hometown.

He took it out to Cannes Film Festival this year and screened it at the Cannes Short Film Corner. Be on the look out for the film sometime soon. Also checkout Morsecode Productions. Derek has worked with a ton of people and made some sweet videos for a bunch of hardcore bands. Peep all the old school hardcore posters in the background. Great job Derek. Keep up the good work!!!! See you soon brotha!!!

Headsup

I was surprised to learn that Staisha is hosting a gathering for my birthday Friday night. Everyone come out and drink with us. 8PM, Harbour Beach Marriott Fort Lauderdale Beach.
If anyone need directions or has questions give Staisha or I a call.

What the hell?

Somethings, I just can't understand. Like this guy? Why would someone put this on their car? Does putting something this ridiculous on your rear window secure you some hot action for the night? The best part is it doesn't just say " Git er Done" But the "er" is a bent over gal. This dude should move far far away from Aventura, were I saw him. I heard Montana is looking for residents... Freaking DOUCHBAG!!!!

Q and A with Staisha Headset

1. Name, Age, Occupation
Staisha Sherei Grosch, 25, Former professional ballet dancer turned pilate's instructor, PT student, cycling enthusiast, and maker of cycling apparel

2. Were do you live?
This cesspool we call Fort Lauderdale

3. What are you riding these days?
A Spicer frame, Origin 8 Cranks, 48/18, vintage NOS yellow perforated Turbo Saddle, Campy Pedals ... blah, blah, blah ... IT'S A SWEET MACHINE!

4. Explain Headset Clothing.
I wanted to make something creative and unique for the cycling community. I made a couple mock-up hats with scrap fabric I had lying around the house and thus Headset was born! In order to keep it fresh I decided to go for an eco-friendly approach by using vintage, salvaged, and reclaimed fabrics. The idea for making the hats reversible was really in order to achieve a more finished look ... It seems to be working out so far but I'm definitely ready to try new things for the company now (e.g. shirts, hoodies, jerseys, toe straps, etc.)

5. Were do you see Headset going. What are your goals for the company?
Well, as I mentioned in the previous question I would really like to see the company expand it's repertoire by offering more then just cycling hats. I have been working on some pretty sick hoodies, jerseys as well as shirts. I've talked to some local artists in the cycling community who I hope to work with on some collaborative pieces as well. I'm not in too much of a rush, but I get so excited about all the new ideas for Headset and I want to see them all come to fruition NOW, hahaha. One thing I'd really like to get a grip on is an awesome line of clothes designed SPECIFICALLY for girls. We may ride bikes but we still want to look cute doing it :) I haven't found anything out there that I'm that impressed with in terms of stylish and practical cycling apparel for the ladies.

6. Do you think that the South Florida Scene will blow up and everyone will be wearing your hats?
The South Florida scene IS blowing up ... will everyone be wearing my hats? Uhhhh, they freagin' BETTER be sporting' Headset!

7. What can we expect to see in the next few months?
Definitely shirts and a couple new hat designs ... the hoodies are still in the works

8. There seems to be more and more girls riding these days. In your opinion, what do you see happening in the future of the ladies?
Supreme RADICAL-ness!!!

9. I have always thought of putting on an all girl Alley Cat. Do you think that is something that would be good or bad?
It would be cool, but I honestly believe that if you asked ANY of the ladies that get down and ride, they would probably tell you that half the thrill of the all-inclusive alley cats is the possibility that a girl is gonna kick some guy's ASS ... hahaha

10. Will you be my date to the bike prom?
My dance card is full ... hahahaha

11. Who should be the next girl I interview?
Why doesn't someone interview YOU?

12. I believe Angel clocked you at 37MPH through the tunnel. Explain how rad that was.
On a scale from 1-10 on the rad-o-meter I'd give the experience a 15.

Q and A with Rusty Buckets

1. Name, age, occupation
Rusty Buckets, 30, Bicycle Mechanic, Castellan, Cartographer of Alicia's glasses.

2. Were do you live?
Louisville, KY

3. What are you riding these days?
Right now I ride a Late 80s/Early 90s (not sure) Ciocc Enemy 60cm with campy, nitto, and American bits. It's all a mish-mash of durable parts, not really any time specific/country related themes. 49x16. And a Surly Steamroller polo modded out with dual brakes to single lever, flats, 39t-20tratio, Panaracer RIBMO 3.2 tires, risers, and shitty flip flop wheel set.

4. Tell us what you like most about ridding Louisville, compared to South Florida?
I can't even begin to describe the difference. I guess the hills, and option for an inner city to rural country ride within the same hour.

5. You were one of the first people in South Florida to start riding fixed gear. Since you started riding, what have you seen change?
Well, first I rode alone and then I met Billy and I knew instantly that my cycling group grew to a vast quantity of two. Two cyclists reaping every inch of fresh road. Then some time went on I may have fallen asleep at some point then more people started lurking around asking all kinds of questions. Then it took me eight months or so to get your ass on a bike. And then some other stuff happened.

6. I can always remember all the tricks you were pulling on your bike. What if I told you that Jeremy [TC] is now the trick guy, and you don't matter anymore?
I'm only into doing tricks to impress Chris Maggio.

7. Tell us what's in your beard?
The entirety of space and time, all forms of matter, energy and momentum, and the physical laws and constants that govern them. I'd send you a picture, but you wouldn't be able to translate the images.

8. What's your favorite city to ride in?
Longmont Potion Castle.

9. Where do you see this whole fixed gear, track bike thing going. When they start selling track bikes in Target how are you going to feel?
At least as far as the popularity it has today, I see it exhausting itself in time. It's a cheap trick like waving a wooden pencil to make it appear to be made of rubber. At some point someones going to lose their grip and put out an eye. I would say cycling in general will keep its momentum so long as the people who love it keep on loving it, regardless of it's current epidemic.

10. You work at a shop in Kentucky. Explain what is different from the shops in South Florida. What is different in terms of customers needs and request?
We work on horses!

11. Tell all of us when you are going to buy up a bunch of Headset Hats and start selling them at your shops?
Yeah! I like beer.

12. When can we all expect to see Rusty Buckets back for a visit?
October.

13. Do you miss your Tall Bike?
She's in a good home.

What a weekend

We were called hipsters by a group of punk kids. Gave them the finger and kept riding. Staisha was cut of by a retard on a scooter. Then we were cut off by a runner who decided to jog across A1A at the worst time. Then, the same scooter rode up behind us and screamed like he was going to hit us and scared the shit out of Staisha and I. Then after all the shitty incidents. A very nice old couple drove beside us. And seemed so happy to see nice people like ourselves out riding bikes. They gave us the thumbs up like 10 times.

AND THEN!!!!

We were riding home from a friends house up on the Commercial Pier. Heading South on A1A. At 16th St. Were were cutoff!!!!

Staisha and I were riding side by side in the bike lane. We had our lights on. Blinking away. When out of know were, some scumbag in a Ford Focus driving North towards us decides he cant wait to get to his house pulled in front of us and shit went down. We both locked up the bikes. I was able to ride around the car. Staisha on the other hand. Went down. I mean we were 5 feet from T-boning this car! After I stopped made sure my girl was ok. I looked at the kid and he looked at me. Then DROVE AWAY!! Well the stupid fuck wasn't the smartest card in the deck. He went down a dead end street. So angry me went after him, (duh) While approaching his U turning car. I dismounted off the saddle like an upset Harley Davidson Dude. Went up to the window and yes, I bitched slapped the kid so hard that, it sounded like a firework. This douchbag had this stupid grin on his face the whole time. And he never once apologized or had any concern for Staisha. Anyway, I wasn't done just yet. I continued to yell at him and make a scene. I spit in his face, punched his car, dented his hood, and so on. The asshole then went inside in friends house, got 2 more dudes and decided they were gonna try to be tough guys. Well, I can be tough guy too. Instead of the them stepping up to me. They were stepping up to Stishy. To make this long story short. I assaulted the man in the car. Being locked up in the cage for the night was not on my agenda. We got on our bikes and dipped out. We made it home and I began to comfort my lady who was in pain. Thank God Staisha is ok. She sustained some gnarly road rash, and a really sore back. Her bike is fine. As I sit here and write about this. I could of went about things differently. I should not have approached the punk. I should have called the cops. Well, o well. I know a handful of people who would have beat the shit out of this loser. On Friday I told everyone to be safe. I should listen to my thoughts more often.

Have a great Weekend!!!

TONIGHT!

Hey everyone. Lets go to Loose Cannons tonight!!! Leaving Ft. Lauderdale at 8PM. Parking at News Lounge and riding over to the start. I can fit 2 more with bikes.

FTL River Rat Alley Cat

Here is the initial flyer for the Alley Cat Staisha and I are putting on. I will be adding the sponsors as I get them. Save the date!

All proceeds from the race will be donated to Pedals For Progress Charity.
Lets do something good.

Thanks Angel for the flyer!!!

Wilco The Album

Finally! I purchased the new Wilco album on June 30. My anticipation for this record was making me crazy. I have been a Wilco fan for a long time. And when I downloaded this from iTunes, I got exactly what I was looking for. If you have always liked Wilco then this album will not disappoint. The album is 11 tracks. All the songs are different, Glenn Kotche's drumming is awesome, and Tweedy's lyrics tell a story to every song. Give it a try. Its ok to expand your musical taste. I hate music. But I love Wilco."Wilco will love you baby"

Chill Cooling Sportowel

Staisha, turned me onto this. The Chill Cooling Sportowel is a pretty nifty invention. Unlike other refreshing wipes. This is an actual towel. 100% recyclable, and Eco-Friendly. Simply open up the package, shake the towel out, and rub yourself down!! Then throw it away. It left me feeling pretty damm CHILL! The company is from Key West, Florida. So they understand the sweaty, soupy place we all live in. And the best part is that the large size includes a neck loop. So next time your out riding in the middle of July. Wrap a Chill Cooling Sportowel around your neck, and continue on with your chill. Checkem out. Their website is pretty cool as well. Available locally at The Fly Shop.

Urban Velo #14

The new issue of Urban Velo is up on their site. Filled with a bunch of good stuff as always!! Download it for free on Urban Velo.

The Cruzbike

Seriously! Cmon. I think this is the most retarded thing I have ever saw. And thank you to Angel for submitting this to me. I would have never known that something this stupid existed. I have no problem with recumbents or any bike for the matter. But why the hell would you buy a bike just to turn around and convert it to a recumbent? Thoughts?
